doll making tip three - cropping
 
Cropping – sometimes I like cropping out doll limbs from a photo. When you do this you want to start by finding a good picture, one that’s pretty good quality and a decent size. Then you want to start cropping – go as close as you can to the edge of the person and use small spaces between the square markers. I usually split the photo into two or three sections so I have the best cut out possible. If the hair is too hard to cut out you can crop roughly around the face and then place a wig over the top.

@katieisprettyinpink - so i have a couple of questions :) do we have to have an outfit in our sets? and from that do we do it in the style of the movie or of our chosen city? coz my movie is set in the 18th centuary and indie wan"t around then :) or can i just choose a modern outfit that fits with the theme of the set (which is the movie)? thanks :)

i choose this outfit for Nina because it's casual and cute, and the addition of the wedges and blazer make it more presentable.

PROPORTIONS - when looking at dolls one of the things that bugs me soooo much is when a doll has a massive head and a tiny body, or really short legs. To make dolls look more natural you need to get the proportions right!
 
It’s really important to have your doll in proportion, too long arms or too big a head look really weird. To get the size and placement looking right, I get a full length photo of someone random and then match up the head size, and then place the rest of the limbs in matching size and position off of that.

Skin colour – make sure the different body parts (head/torso/arms/legs) have the same(ish) coloured skin tone. Pale arms look really weird with tan legs. There are a few different skin tones (in my opinion) really pale, pinkish, yellowish, orangeish and then the different darker tones, as well as black and white. You might have to look through a few doll part collections (I love @satinee’s collections. They’re so amazing) until you find a matching part, but it’s worth it when you do. If you really can’t find legs that fit, use a pair with black or coloured tights/stockings/leggings on.
 
(Please note: this is only my opinion, please take no offense. This tip is designed to help you with your doll making, not to say that I am amazing and that your dolls are “bad” or anything like that)

Create a set showing your favorite nail look along with the polish, glitter, stencils, etc. you’d use to do it at home!
